Ecosystems develop in reliance on unique natural resources. Given NYC’s robust legacy in the finance, fashion, advertising, restaurant and media industries, Silicon Alley is an understandably nurturing habitat for fintech, fashion tech, food tech, adtech and digital media startups.
Is this the right way to think about how and why the landscape has evolved? In addition to the natural resources attributable to the city’s industrial base, what else can be introduced (by way of policies, people, capabilities or otherwise) in order to support and strengthen the development of a unique startup ecosystem that is not defined by reference to other geographies (e.g., Silicon Valley, Silicon Beach, Silicon Plains).
