This session explores the remarkable life of Ratan Tata, as narrated by his authorized biographer, Dr. Thomas Mathew. and Moderated by Ms. Sonu Bhasin. This conversation delves into the personal journey, leadership, values, and vision that built an empire and inspired a nation.

Thomas Mathew

Dr. Thomas Mathew is a distinguished author, corporate strategist, and defense expert with extensive experience across government, finance, and infrastructure development.

As Additional Secretary to President Pranab Mukherjee, he developed India’s Presidential Museum and authored books gifted to global leaders, including Barack Obama and Xi Jinping. In the Ministry of Finance, he pioneered reforms to open India’s capital markets to foreign investors, and in the Ministry of Defence, he led critical defense procurement projects, including India’s first naval satellite and key submarine acquisitions.

Dr. Mathew’s leadership extended to urban governance as Mayor of Cochin, where he introduced groundbreaking initiatives like India’s first private garbage collection system and the computerization of civil registries. As MD of Kerala State Construction Corporation, he spearheaded transformative infrastructure projects, raising $400 million for regional development.

Widely recognized for his contributions, Dr. Mathew combines strategic vision with impactful execution across diverse fields.

Sonu Bhasin, Moderator

Sonu Bhasin is a pioneering senior professional with over 30 years of experience, having led large businesses and diverse teams across financial and non-financial sectors in India and abroad. Starting as a TAS Officer with the Tata Group, she held senior leadership roles, including Director at ING Barings, President at Axis Bank, Group President at Yes Bank, and COO at Tata Capital Limited.

Now an Independent Director on the boards of reputed companies, Sonu’s focus on family businesses as the Founder of FAB – Families And Business. As Editor-in-Chief of Families & Business magazine and a family business historian,working with both patriarchs and inheritors to build multi-generational enterprises.

A bestselling author, including her books The Inheritors and Unstoppable delve into entrepreneurship and family business success. Named among the Global 100 Most Influential Individuals for Family Enterprises, I am also a columnist for The Economic Times.
